The Fellowship of the Early Church

Session 5 • Family • Devotional

Spend some time reading and meditating on these verses from Acts 2:42-47. Here we read of how the early church gathered together daily for fellowship and prayer. Spend some time in prayer or journaling about what comes to mind for you as you meditate on these verses. Begin dreaming of what it might look like for us, as a church community, to live in this way. What could the Kingdom of God look like amongst us, here in Brooklyn? You may even want to do Lectio Divina with this passage and engage with it imaginatively. There are some prompts that you can reflect on below the text.

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Imaginative Engagement

Picture yourself in the home of one of theses early believers, participating in all that is described.

  • What do you see?
  • What do you hear?
  • What do you smell?
  • Who is with you around the table?
  • What needs are represented?
  • What signs and wonders are you witnessing?
  • How do you feel praising God in the company of these fellow believers?
