Intercessory Prayer

Session 6 • Hospitality • Activation

“Your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.” Matthew 6:10

Intercession is very simply asking God for the needs of other people or situations. As you meet strangers, or get to know neighbors one beautiful expression of Christlike hospitality is to pray for the needs that they express. Talk to God on their behalf and ask him for breakthrough in their lives and circumstances.

Below is a short video on Intercession from The Prayer Course by 24/7 Prayer. Peter Greig suggests some of the following steps in praying effectively for others.

  1. Get informed: learn the facts about the people/situations you are praying for
  2. Get inspired: What is God saying about this? Invite the Holy Spirit to speak to you about the situations you’re praying for.
  3. Get indignant: Engage your own heart and allow yourself to to think and feel honestly as you pray.

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:13-14

A great way to discover the needs within your neighborhood, is to go on a Prayer Walk. Ask God to draw your attention to particular places or people that you can begin interceding for. On a recent walk around Greenpoint, God drew my attention to this sign in a particular store. I felt like he was inviting me to begin praying for blessing over the owner, and favor over their business, who are also desiring to extend Christ-like hospitality.
